Riders expansion plans to the home of the Leicester Riders basketball squad has gained planning permission. Morningside Arena, home of the current British Basketball League champions Leicester Riders, has been granted planning permission for a 12,900 sq ft extension to add facilities and extra courts.

The venue has capacity for up to 3,000 people and stages national and international sporting and cultural events as well as a hosting a range of community sessions.

Riders expansion plans in 2022 mean this project continues to be a beacon of opportunity. The project is expected to increase the arena’s basketball capacity from three courts to five, with match-day and outdoor catering facilities also included in the plans. Originally it was part funded by Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP)’s Regional Growth Fund Round 4 (RGF) in 2014 with the Leicester Riders basketball team securing a grant of £1m.

This increase will also make new jobs and continue to boost the Leicester and Leicestershire economy. Something that the LLEP has committed to in it’s 2021 Economic Growth Strategy. Making it a focal point for sporting activities, training and providing economic prosperity.

Not only home to the champions but is central to Leicester’s wider sporting and cultural offer, hosting sports such as boxing, snooker and darts, as well as concerts and food festivals. The increased number of courts will also drive participation in basketball, an increasingly popular sport in the UK.

Tim Rose, the director at M-EC, said,

“We were pleased to be instructed on this local project and working alongside the wider project team.

“The team which has included HSSP Architects, with whom we have a good working relationship, having worked together on a number of previous projects.

“We continue to work on this project following planning approval, and we are looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition.”
